Basketball and Community Outreach To Cuba
This is a unique opportunity for Women’s Basketball team members to travel, train and volunteer in Cuba. Support our team to experience international competition and gain a new perspective!
Story Description
The cultural exchange in Cuba is designed to provide training and competition in a unique environment while learning about the culture, history and people of Cuba. The itinerary is arranged by Canada-Cuba Sport and Cultural Festivals and is coordinated with the Cuban Ministries of Sport and Education. For our athletes and staff, it is an opportunity to experience international competition and gain a new perspective and learning.
Challenges & the Impact of Your Support
Most athletes benefit from full or partial athletic scholarships to assist with the cost of university tuition and fees. However housing, books and living expenses are additional costs for the student-athletes and families to absorb. Although this opportunity to experience Cuba is invaluable in the learning and development of the young adults, the cost is steep. The trip costs approximately $2,600 per person and team members need to generate the majority of this money themselves. We rely on the generosity of others to support this initiative.
About UBC Women’s Basketball
UBC Women’s Basketball’s motto is to Strive for Excellence in the 3 C’s: in the Classroom, on the Court and in the Community. This trip provides the opportunity to broaden our perspective on how we might assist others in less fortunate conditions. We will interact with the Cuban athletes and coaches and engage in community work while we are there.
