Agora Cafe Covid-19 Upgrades
To keep our valued customers and volunteers safe, Agora will be investing in new equipment: plexiglass shields, sanitizer, masks and gloves.
Project Description
Agora Cafe is a student volunteer-run, non-for-profit café at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver campus. Last semester, when the university shut down due to Covid-19, Agora was required to shut down as well, and will not be able to open until at least fall of 2021. Before we can reopen the cafe, there are changes that will need to happen to the cafe both in the building and behind the scenes. We will be working in coordination with UBC Faculty Operations to ensure Agora is up to standards set out by UBC and the province of BC.
This crowdfunding campaign is to raise enough money for the estimated costs of installing plexiglass and investing in PPE and proper sanitization methods. Having lost our main source of income, Agora is facing major financial difficulties right now, and does not have the means to implement our safety strategy. We are asking for your help with our goal of keeping Agora staff and customers safe and preventing the spread of Covid-19.
Challenges and Impact of Your Support

- Plexiglass screen with pass-through slit at bottom – $195.00
- Disinfectant spray, case of 12 bottles – $164.95
- 70% Alcohol sanitizer pump bottles (case of 6) – $49.99
- Masks for all incoming volunteers – $59.95/box of 50
- Disposable nitrile gloves – $18.99/box of 250
- Surface disinfectant wipes – $17.99/tub
Our total of $1500 was calculated based on what we expect to need to open in the fall of 2021. I believe we can reach this goal with the help of people like you! Any amount raised above the goal amount would go to helping us continue our mission of providing healthy, affordable food for students.
We have also faced a major challenge due to UBC’s shift online, because we no longer have the same opportunity to connect with the students and faculty that pass through the cafe. About the Agora Cafe
Agora Cafe is a beloved part of the Land and Food Systems community, often described as the hidden gem in the basement of the H.R. MacMillan building. We have been running since 2005, providing students and faculty with affordable, healthy, local vegetarian and vegan meals. We want to be able to share and promote our values of food security and sustainability, values that are also held by the LFS Faculty and UBC. We also aim provide the opportunity for students to gain food service experience as well as developing leadership skills. Agora is a not-for-profit run entirely by student volunteers, which allows them to gain meaningful experience while getting the chance to become more connected to their university community.
