University of Guelph: Men’s Rugby Fundraiser for HeadsUpGuys

Help our team to raise funds to support HeadsUpGuys, and continue the important work to improve mental health in men, and prevent suicide.

Project Description

“In the late summer of 2022, we learned that one of our teammates had passed away. While coping with this difficult news, the team found comfort in sharing stories about their teammate and discussing their own struggles with depression and other challenges. To hear a group of young men sharing their feelings in such a way was a very powerful experience and we felt it important to continue to share and support the work of HeadsUpGuys.”

– Cory Hector, Head Coach for Men’s Rugby at the University of Guelph.

Challenges and Impact of Your Support

In Canada, men account for three out of four suicide deaths, with suicide being the 2nd leading cause of death for men under the age of 50. This amounts to approximately 3,000 deaths per year, or roughly eight men dying per day, with untreated depression being the leading risk factor for suicide.

Yet, we know that suicide is preventable with the right support and treatments in place. We need to help men learn the symptoms of depression and remove barriers that prevent them from reaching out to friends, family, and mental health professionals.

Your gift will help HeadsUpGuys support men in their recovery from depression, reducing their risk of suicide, and inspiring them to live healthier lives. HeadsUpGuys offers tips and articles that arm men with the tools they need to fight depression, as well as recovery stories from men who have faced depression, and an international therapist directory to connect men with local mental health professionals.
