Story Description

HeadsUpGuys.org is a unique online resource that was developed to support men in their fight against depression by providing tips, tools, information about professional services, and stories of success. Our tagline is Better Starts Here, a place where men can go to start their journey toward recovery.

Give now, and your gift will have double the impact!

Until July 31, 2018 your donation will be part of a unique matching opportunity, as local business owners and philanthropists, the Newell family have stepped up to match all donations up to $100,000.

Founded by Dr. John Ogrodniczuk and run through UBC’s Faculty of Medicine, this free resource is accessible by anyone with an internet connection. We’ve created tons of videos, stories, and solutions for families, friends, and individuals concerned about managing and recovering from depression.

Depression affects millions of men every year, and is now the leading cause of disability worldwide.  Unfortunately, a lot of men buy into myths about depression (e.g., it’s a sign of personal weakness, real men don’t ask for help), preventing them from reaching out to others to build the supports necessary for successfully fighting depression.  Untreated depression is one of the major risk factors for suicide.  The suicide rate among men is about 3 times higher than that for women; a sad and preventable consequence of men trying to bear the burden of battling depression alone.

Challenges & Impact of Your Support

Since 2015, we’ve helped more than a half a million men from Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom get the help they need to start traveling the road to recovery. Now we need your help to take this project around the world.

Until July 31, 2018 your donation will be part of a unique matching opportunity as local business owners and philanthropists, the Newell family, have stepped up to match all donations up to $100,000.

Your donation will help us:

  • Create comprehensive mental health resources for men from countries and cultures from around the world.
  • Broaden the HeadsUpGuys collection of popular story videos with stories from real men from around the world sharing their unique and shared experiences of their recovery of depression.
  • Create more awareness of our website through media, marketing, and our social media outlets.
