We are reaching out to the community to ask for your support and in-lieu of gifts for her retirement, we are hoping you can help contribute to the Kate Ross Centennial Leader Entrance Award.

Project Description

Dr. Kate Ross is widely known and well-regarded within the Canadian higher education community for her commitment to serving students, supporting and mentoring colleagues; and her significant contributions to the advancement of the Canadian registrarial profession over her 35+ year career.

Kate has announced her retirement for the end of this year, and in the true spirit of generosity, she hopes to create an award for students with financial need who plan to study at the University of British Columbia.

Challenges and Impact of Your Support

Your gift today will not only honour Kate’s contributions to UBC and post-secondary education, but also assist students who are transitioning to UBC from secondary school of another post-secondary institution

You can help to support students who show an interest in joining and contributing to the UBC community, but who would not be able to attend without financial assistance.

About Dr. Kate Ross

Kate has worked to better access to students who are under-represented in post-secondary institutions. She guides institutions to focus on advancing student access.  Kate led UBC’s efforts to implement the Youth in Care tuition waiver for eligible students who are currently, or have, lived as youth in care. This led the province of BC to follow suit with a tuition waiver program for all BC institutions shortly thereafter.  Kate’s motivation in this initiative is deeply rooted and committed.  She is a member of the Aunt Leah’s Place Supporting Education for Foster Youth (SEFFY) Advisory Committee, a program that supports long-term education planning for foster youth and former foster youth in care.  Likewise, she remains an outspoken Leadership Donor and champion for UBC’s United Way Community Campaign that supports the Youth Futures Education Fund – supporting low barrier access to funds that support living expenses to youth who have aged out of the foster care system.

Kate is a champion of students and higher education staff – their ideas, their potential, their aspirations; and likewise, students and staff hold Kate in high regard.  Kate received the Fred Dietrich Award (2010) in recognition of her support of SFU student athletes, and was nominated directly by students for the Canadian Advisor of the Year award in 2011.  SFU staff have recognized Kate with the Leadership Award, an annual professional staff award with nomination by her direct reports. UBC staff have recognized Kate with their nomination (2017) for the YWCA Women of Distinction Award.

Kate recently has been awarded the 2022 ARUCC Outstanding Achievement and Honorary Associate awards by the Association of Registrars at the Universities and Colleges of Canada (ARUCC). The outstanding achievement award recognizes Kate’s work in service of the Canadian higher education community for her commitment to serving students, supporting and mentoring colleagues, and her significant contributions to the advancement of the Canadian registrarial profession over her career.
