Support UBC Thunderbirds Baseball
The UBC Baseball program needs your support for student-athletes as they return to in-person competition for the 2021-22 Season.
Project Description
The pandemic has impacted sport programs across all levels and across all industries in Canada and the UBC Baseball program is no exception. On top of the amazing support from the University of British Columbia, there is still a need for the program to fill the gap created due to the challenging circumstances left in the wake of the pandemic. Support for this campaign will go directly to offset operational costs that the program will incur this season at the team and individual athlete level. It’s imperative that our players are able to access to the most advanced high-performance equipment in order to develop, compete and perform at the highest level.
The team is always striving to improve upon its record setting 25 Major League Baseball draft picks and being the premier baseball program for student-athletes in Canada for athletics and academics. The funds raised will directly go towards student athletes in terms of the operational and equipment costs needed to represent the University of British Columbia in the NAIA and compete at the highest level in North America. The student athletes and staff thank you for your support.
Challenges and Impact of Your Support
Today’s student-athletes continues to balance the financial pressures of being both high achieving athletes and students throughout the ever-changing environment of the pandemic. The comeback for student athletes to competition and to campus has been and will continue to be nothing short of impressive. This virtual campaign aims to provide financial support for the program and individual student athletes so that they can focus on the physical and mental demands that are required to compete and ultimately succeed representing Canada’s collegiate baseball program.
About UBC Thunderbirds Baseball
The UBC Thunderbirds Baseball program is proud of the young student athletes that are engaging in this project and in the community. The program’s student athletes put in hours of hard work in the classroom, in the gym and on the field. Despite the unprecedented challenging circumstances that have arisen over the last two years resulting in two canceled competition seasons, the UBC Thunderbirds Baseball program continues to see incredible results. Academically, the team saw 2021 as one of the program’s most successful academic years to date, with a 77.2% cumulative team average and 14 individual Academic All-Canadians, achieving 80% or greater. Athletically, the team had a number of summer baseball success stories, with two athletes signing contracts with Major League Baseball teams – Adam McKillican joining the Texas Rangers and Garrett Hawkins signing with the San Diego Padres.
The special group of student athletes filling in the 2022 roster are looking forward to the upcoming season and are tremendously grateful for the support.
