UBC Thunderbirds Women’s Field Hockey

Join us in supporting UBC Women’s Field Hockey student-athletes as they return to in-person competition for the 2021-22 season.

Project Description

The funds raised will go directly towards student-athletes in the program in support of their operational and participation costs needed to represent the University of British Columbia at the highest level of field hockey in Canada.

The UBC Women’s Field Hockey program is the most decorated program in Canadian history, with 19 national championships, numerous All-Canadians, current, and future Olympians. Thunderbird student-athletes have long been a source of pride for the University of British Columbia, combining unmatched academic and athletic excellence to produce the future leaders of tomorrow. Success in the classroom and in competition requires the support of the entire UBC community. With your help, we will continue to reach our goals and positively impact the lives of the Women’s Field Hockey program for years to come.

Creating an environment for student-athletes to strive for excellence is why we work hard to fundraise, gain support for our athletes, and provide them with the opportunities to strive for success.

– Poonam Sandhu, Head Coach and former student-athlete

Your support is an investment in these young leaders, in the University of British Columbia, and in the future of athletics at UBC.

Challenges and Impact of Your Support

UBC Field Hockey is one of the most successful on the field programs but is one of the most underfunded varsity programs at UBC. With 86% of the current team achieving academic All-Canadian status 80% of higher, with a team average of 86%, these student-athletes train and study hard. The program needs your support so that the student-athletes can focus on their academic and athletic pursuits, and are not burdened with taking on part-time work to be able to afford the experience of attending a world-class institution. The current student-athletes are still in a place where the individual athlete is still responsible for purchasing their own individual equipment and many of the coaching staff who support them are in unpaid volunteer roles.

For the program to succeed and for the student-athletes to be champions, the program needs your support. Join us in supporting the present and future of this world-class field hockey program in a way that recognizes its historic roots, current excellence, and potential for the future.

About the UBC Women’s Field Hockey

Ken and Susan Chow are leading a dynamic group of UBC Field Hockey parents and alumni to raise funds for the program to regain equality and respect for Women’s UBC field hockey team. Their goal is to build sustainability for the future of the team and for student-athletes to be able to succeed both in the classroom and on the field, without any financial impediments.

Our twin daughters have thoroughly enjoyed their time playing for UBC over the years. They have made long-lasting friendships and are now pursuing their post-graduate educations with incredible skill sets developed as UBC student-athletes.

The team has won 7 consecutive national championships and has a strong group of athletes on a campaign to win another in 2021. There are numerous incredible students and athletes in the program who embody all the qualities that UBC would aspire student-athletes and future leaders to possess.

Join us in supporting them all today.
