UBCO-ASSET Research Group at World Conference in Italy
Support the UBC Okanagan ASSET Group’s journey to the prestigious World Conference on Earthquake Engineering in Italy!
Project Description
The UBC Okanagan Advanced Structural Simulation & Experimental Testing (ASSET) Group is aiming to attend the World Conference on Earthquake Engineering (WCEE) in Milan, Italy from June 30-July 5, 2024 and we need your help!
This will be a first for the ASSET group, showcasing UBCO and its ongoing projects on an international stage. Attending the conference will also help train engineers in the Okanagan. The team hopes to bring back new findings and ongoing projects from around the world to share with the engineering community interested in Resilient Infrastructure.
At WCEE2024, the group will convene and lead a technical session titled “Cost-effective resiliency solutions in reinforced concrete structures,” attracting global researchers to share insights and experiences from Okanagan’s projects.
Led by Dr. Lisa Tobber, the ASSET Group at UBCO focuses on Structural-Earthquake Engineering. Our mission is to revolutionize structural engineering by enhancing safety and developing low-damage structures for post-earthquake scenarios using cost-effective methods. This year, we aim to attend WCEE2024 to present our objectives, ongoing research, outcomes, and advancements. We will also conduct a special session, presenting eight research papers to demonstrate UBCO’s latest discoveries.
Challenges and Impact of Your Support
Contributions towards the ASSET group’s participation in WCEE-2024 are vital. Attendees self-fund their travel, conference fees, and accommodation, averaging around $4,000 CAD each. Your generous support will help us manage these costs, ensuring equitable distribution among our team members.

About the UBCO-ASSET Group
At the ASSET Group, we embrace a comprehensive approach, integrating social, environmental, and economic perspectives to address complex engineering challenges. We focus on crafting innovative, greener structural designs resilient to natural disasters, especially earthquakes. We explore structural behaviors under seismic conditions through large-scale experimental tests and advanced simulations.
Our ambition extends beyond technical advancements. We strive to make engineering inclusive, improve structural safety, and pioneer low-damage solutions for significant seismic events. Collaborating with industry experts and community leaders, we aim to create meaningful, positive change. The ASSET Group is keen on engaging with industry, community, and academic partners to broaden our impact.
