Support UBC Thunderbots

UBC Thunderbots needs your help to build a fleet of 8 robots to reclaim our first-place title at RoboCup 2024 in Eindhoven, Netherlands!

Project Description

UBC Thunderbots, a leading engineering student design team, creates autonomous soccer-playing robots for RoboCup, pushing the boundaries of AI and autonomous control. After clinching first-place victories in 2019 and 2021 and securing 4th place in 2023, we’re gearing up for RoboCup 2024 in Eindhoven, Netherlands, and we need your support.

Your contribution will help us finalize our robot redesign, incorporating key innovations like our acclaimed dribbler system. These funds will also support the development of a new electronic power board and user-interface circuit board for real-time adjustments during gameplay.

Your gift will play a crucial role in facilitating our journey to RoboCup 2024 in Eindhoven, covering travel expenses from July 14 to July 27, competition registration, accommodation, and other essential fees. And not only propel UBC Thunderbots towards victory but also support the ongoing evolution of robotics and autonomous systems.

Join us on this exciting journey and be a part of our mission to bring home the championship at RoboCup 2024!

Challenges and Impact of Your Support

A smart AI is nothing without talented, well-built robot players to execute its strategies. That’s why we are building a new and improved fleet of 8 robots to take our gameplay to the next level. Your contribution will enable the team to reach its full potential and put forward our best possible robots as we represent UBC and Canada at RoboCup 2024!

Some of our costs include:

  • $300 for each specialized motor, for a total of $11,000 to complete our fleet
  • $500 per NVIDIA Jetson Nanos developer kit for our computers
  • $1,000 to register the team at RoboCup, and $550 to register each of the 16-18 members attending the competition
  • $3400 projected cost for each member’s flights and accommodation during the competition period

Your donations enable us to build one of the most intelligent and dynamic fleets of soccer-playing robots in North America. Our team has been faced with a continuous stream of challenges over the last 3 years due to the after-effects of the pandemic, and are eager to prove ourselves again on the international stage. Both in-kind and monetary donations go a long way to helping our team conduct our best work.

You will also be supporting the growth of student engineering and robotics by providing financial aid to students traveling for international competitions. Your donation breaks down barriers, providing opportunities to learn at one of the premier international robotics competitions.

About UBC Thunderbots

Thunderbots is a fully student-run engineering design team comprised of 70 undergraduate students from a variety of disciplines and academic years. Our members come from 11 different programs and departments across UBC, allowing the team to learn from one another while applying their technical and leadership skills.

From our very first robots in 2006, to qualifying for our first competition in 2009, and participating in every subsequent RoboCup since, Thunderbots has been a home to students brought together by a passion for robotics, soccer, and competition. Our predecessors left behind the legacy of becoming the first Canadian team to win a Small-Size League Division at RoboCup 2019. Five years on, our team has a new 70-person roster eager to prove ourselves once again in one of the fastest-evolving robotics competitions worldwide.

Our team is part of a growing international network of academic research groups, pushing the boundaries of state-of-the-art robotics and autonomous intelligent systems. Our projects this year include the development of brand-new mechanical systems for shots and passes, new electrical systems to control our motors, and state-of-the-art AI motion planners and game strategy. Our team takes pride in pushing the limits of robotics soccer to stay ahead of the competition.
